There are two main methods of dialysis treatment: hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Both methods help clean the blood of patients with kidney failure, but they are applied in different ways and have advantages and disadvantages that can influence patient preferences.
Hemodialysis is typically performed in a healthcare center or hospital. The patient's blood is drawn outside the body, cleaned through a machine, and returned to the body. This procedure is usually done three times a week, and each session lasts several hours.
Peritoneal dialysis, on the other hand, is a treatment method that can be done at home. In this method, the peritoneum (the lining of the abdomen) acts as a filter to clean the blood. A special fluid is infused into the patient's abdominal cavity, and after a certain period, the fluid is drained out, carrying waste products with it. Peritoneal dialysis offers a more flexible treatment option but may not be suitable for every patient.
